The path to the Tristar da Cunha archipelago is also complicated. Tristan da Cunha is the most remote inhabited archipelago on earth. The islands of the archipelago are located in the South Atlantic. The coasts of the Republic of South Africa are located 2 816 km from the archipelago. On the largest island of the archipelago, about 300 people live, whose surface is 98 sq km. It must be mentioned that there is no airport in the archipelago, so you can reach it exclusively by sea.
The archipelago is of volcanic origin and has been formed according to versions of the scientists about 1 million years ago. The main attraction of the distant islands is the unique nature. The main inhabitants of this picturesque area are the rare birds and insects. There are no mammals on the islands. The number of rare birds and endemic plants is simply huge. Here you can see the smallest flightless bird - the Atlantis.
The archipelago was named in honor of the Portuguese explorer Tristan da Cunha, the first man to go along the coast of one of the northern islands in 1506. The first emigrants landed on the coast of the central island in 1816. The citizens of Scotland and Ireland, as well as a few emigrants from Italy, Holland and America, were among them. Today, there are the permanent settlements only on the central island, which has the same name with the archipelago. On the other islands are the research and weather stations.
