The Fagaras Castle in Romania is known by the tourists under the unofficial name 'Castle of Dracula'. The castle, built in 1301, served as the residence of the rulers of Wallachia, whose number was also Vlad III, 'Dracula'. The castle, which can be seen today, was erected in the 17th century during the great reconstruction. For more than 300 years, its external appearance has remained almost unchanging.
The old castle is the largest building of the town of the same name and is covered with the dark legends. Until 1969 this was a prison where the political prisoners were kept. At present, the ancient building is open for visitors. In the castle are the historical museum, as well as an impressively large library.
The old castle is also known among the gourmets who visit the castle restaurant located in the castle. It is not only the most popular dishes of the Romanian cuisine cooked according to the old recipes but also the best varieties of the local wine. The restaurant has a large wine cellar. In 2004, the castle was chosen as the shooting location for the film 'The Unhappy Kings', and is therefore also popular with the Kinofans.
