According to the history of Italy in the 9th to 13th centuries, there were four republics in the country at that time, namely, Pisa, Genoa, Venice, and Amalfi. The governments of these republics were taking efforts in establishing strong trading relations with Europe and the East. Amalfi was one of the major cities on these trade routes. It became an independent region by the end of the 9th century. Local people had a unique talent – they could avoid wars and large conflicts and preferred to negotiate all problems with other regions and countries, strengthening their commercial ties.

However, the history of Amalfi had dark periods as well. In 1135, troops from Pisa completely destroyed the fleet of the Italian commercial city. Amalfi couldn’t protect itself from invaders who plundered the city. The once well-developed republic of Amalfi ceased to exist. However, the wheel of fortune brings not only disasters but also prosperity. Thanks to incredible beauty of this region, Amalfi survived and became a popular city again. Nowadays, this is a renowned and well-established tourist center in Italy.
