Ladder Abaneri, India

From series “Furious Footways Around the World That Make You Dizzy”
Not all of the most breathtaking stairs of the planet lead up. A good example of this is a staircase, which is located in the old Indian city of Abaneri. In ancient times, city inhabitants built a deep well, at the bottom of which they were escaping from the exausting heat. It is to the bottom of this well that the legendary Abaneri staircase leads. Like many centuries ago, today the bottom of the well is filled with water. A hundred years ago, everyone could bathe in the well, but today the historic landmark is open exclusively to pilgrims who are allowed to wash their feet in the well.

Ladder Abaneri, India To descend into the well of the right square shape, many steep stone staircases were equipped along its perimeter. All along the perimeter there are 3500 steps. The stairs have no railing, so the descent to the well bottom can be difficult for people with a weak vestibular apparatus. It is necessary to go down the stairs very cautiously. If you stumble, there is absolutely nothing that can be grasped to restore the balance. The ancient well is very beautiful, it was built of dark volcanic stone. According to rough estimates of scientists, the age of the well is no less than 1200 years.

Travellers who want to visit the prominent sight of Abaneri, should consider that even in the midst of a hot summer it is very cold at the bottom of the well. The temperature rarely rises above the mark of +5 degrees Celsius here. This fact, however, does not bother local children at all. They often bathe in the pool and do not deny themselves the pleasure of diving into muddy water with a head. Next - Stairs to Schlossberg
