Lots of interesting secrets are hidden in the Badain Jaran Desert in China. Only in this desert you can see the sand dunes, which reach a height of 500 meters. The place is characterized by constant and fairly strong winds, which create unique landscapes. Under the influence of the wind dunes emit a loud noise. Researchers informally call this the whistling sands.
Another great feature of the wilderness are beautiful lakes located at the foot of the dunes. Some lakes are freshwater, and in others water is very salty. The desert area occupies 49 000 square km. In many respects it owes a number of its features to melted groundwater. There are more than a hundred lakes that are constantly fed by the underground springs. They originate hundreds of kilometers away from desert borders. Name of Badain Jaran Desert can be translated from the Mongolian as Mysterious Lake. Its waters really are unique natural landmarks.
The territory of the vast desert is washed by the Ruo Shui river. Unusual landscapes were formed on its banks too. One of the main tourist activities is the study of lakes located in the desert. All of them are unique. Some lakes are painted in bright colors because they are inhabited by the colonies of microorganisms. Nice salt crust is often formed along salt lakes, so that they look like large mirrors in carved frames. Next to the fresh water lakes you can see not only a unique desert vegetation, but also settlements of nomads.
