The coldest city in the world is situated in Russia. The average annual temperature in Verkhoyansk is -18.6 degrees Celsius. Its population is more than 1 100 people. Local residents love their city and don't leave it even because of harsh climatic conditions. Verkhoyansk is the northernmost city of Yakutia. In winter, the temperature is often below 60 degrees subzero. This far northern city was founded in the 17th century. For many years, political exiles have being sent there.
Eventually, Verkhoyansk gained a status of a large agricultural city. Now, it's one of the country's largest centers of the reindeer and horse breeding. In the immediate vicinity of the city, there are forests that are a source of wood and fur. Verkhoyansk is not much different from the usual Russian cities, except severe weather conditions. Here, you can see ordinary residences; there are playgrounds and parking lots for cars in courtyards. There are several amazing cultural attractions too.
The most amazing and famous cultural site is Pole of Cold Museum that was founded in 1990. The museum has a rich collection of local historical exhibits attributed to the culture and life of the indigenous inhabitants of Yakutia. The main exhibit of the museum is a yurt, the traditional dwelling of the Yakuts. Its classical design was recreated as accurately as possible. Verkhoyansk is not among the popular tourist cities of Russia, but fans of unusual and extreme rest will love being there.
