Gare du Nord Station is a very stylish and interesting place in Paris from the touristic point of view. This station was opened in 1864. Today it has 44 railway lines and is one of the largest in Europe. Every year this station has been served by more than 200 million people. It serves both suburb and international trains.
The first building of the station was built under the project of Jacques Ignace Hittorff. The wonderful facade was made in a shape of the triumphal arch. The main peculiarity of the huge building construction is the cast columns, which hold the roof. They were made under the unique order in one of the most advanced plants of England. There wasn’t any appropriate machinery that can make such columns at that time in Europe.
Today Gare du Nord Station is a real tourist centre where travellers can be satisfied the widest range of services. There you can see not only traditional stores and cafes, also there has placed some bank representative offices and tourism offices. In this place you can get city maps or to sign up for sightseeing tours. The outstanding building continues to astonish modern architects. The project was challenging. Both it was right and accurate from the engineering point of view. The station has been working for more than 140 years.
