Roombeek Street, Netherlands

From series “Top 13 Most Fantastic and Colorful Streets and Quarters”
The unusual Roombeek street is in the Dutch city of Enschede. Many tourists know it as the Street of Cracked Stones. Until 2000, this shopping street was just average. That year was marked by a tragic event. A large warehouse of pyrotechnics blew up on the street. More than 650 houses were destroyed in a massive explosion. It took several years to restore the street. During the reconstruction of buildings and pavements, an underground stream was discovered. It was decided to bring the flow to the surface.

Roombeek Street, Netherlands Today, the unusual pool with fragments of stones is the main decoration of the newly rebuilt street. You can walk on the stone plates. Stones look particularly impressive in winter, when they are covered with snow. Like many years ago, today the street features numerous shops and eating places, so it is always quite crowded there. Many tourists come to the shopping street specifically to make memorable photos of the stream.

For locals, the Memory Stream is a reminder about the tragic events of 2000, when 23 people died. The monument was created in memory of the tragic event. A beautiful park, where the locals love to relax, serves as a commemoration place too. Not only popular shops, but also some modern cultural centers, where amazing activities are held every week, can be found on one of the most original Dutch streets today. Next - Lombard Street

Top destination around Roombeek Street - Enschede

The fate of this city is quite tragic. Because of this, the residents of Enschede have even received a sarcastic nickname “fire-raiser” (Brandstichters) from their countrymen. Indeed, three global fires destroyed this city in 1517, 1750 and 1862. This fact explains why there are just a few medieval buildings with stone and wooden architecture here.

For a long time Enschede has been one of the largest centers of the textile industry, but starting from the 70's the production has steadily come to recession. Cheap goods from Asia have made an evil joke with the local industry. It seemed that the city had faced the inevitable decline.

This fact has forced the city’s authorities to look for ways of saving Enschede. The development of shopping tourism has become a life-saving decision. Quite quickly numerous modern shopping centers, markets and boutiques have appeared in the city. Convenient location of the city, excellent transportation infrastructure, and proximity to the border have allowed organizing trading really quickly. Nowadays Enschede is literally reborn. It welcomes guests with its modern museums, cinemas, shopping malls and fine art galleries, steadily turning into the center of not only commercial but also cultural tourism.
