Kildrummy Castle, Scotland

From series “The Greatest Castles of Scotland”
Once Kildrummy Castle was the largest in Eastern Scotland. Notwithstanding that today the castle is almost ruined, tourists like to visit it. This castle had a great number of owners and at the beginning of the 18th century after another unsuccessful rebellion of Jacobite, the castle was desolated. Before the fortress was destroyed, it had an unusual form of shield. This form of the building wasn’t typical for defeating buildings of Scotland.

Kildrummy Castle, Scotland Today there saved only the basement of the castle. Somewhere there saved walls of the ground floor. In 1925 on the territory of the castle were made a lot of archaeological digs. At that time there was found an original floor made from the decorative stone. Visitors can go to the touristic centre on the territory of historical place in order to receive useful information. For example, there you can see a detailed plan of the castle and acquaint with the unusual planning.

Since 1951 the castle has been owned by Historic Scotland. Now it is open for tourists and the excursion includes a walk in the neighbourhood of the castle where you can see a lot of outstanding things. Not so far from the castle has saved an old quarry. It was used in the 9th century for building works of the first fortress. A walk in the glen can become something unforgettable. There you can see a water garden with a great number of beautiful plants. Every summer the garden is decorated with wonderful flowerbeds and unusual landscape style. Near the castle, you can find an old villa that belonged to Agsten. Today there is a famous Kildrummy Castle Hotel. Next - Tolquhon Castle
