Dunvegan Castle is located on the north of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye. This castle was built in 1220 and now it is one of the most known castles in Scotland. Since the medieval time, the castle belongs to the Clan MacLeod. This is one of the oldest and populous castles of North Scotland. Nowadays there live the thirtieth generation. This place became open for people in 1933 since that time tourists visit it daily.
During the excursion tourists can see a complex of defensive installations, only 1/6 of buildings is closed to people. Travellers can visit the castle except for the habitable rooms and the study of the present owner. The main artefact of the castle is the family tree of the clan. The castle has a lot of old furniture, wonderful carpets, sculptures and other antiques.
The family has presented several items of the reliquary. There you can find a clan flag, various goblets and even a horn of wild bull that was killed by a family member without firing a shot. The castle has a wonderful garden. There you can see an old pond and a waterfall, a lot of rare plants and flowers. The garden has a nice viewing area, there opens a view on all outskirts. The territory of the palace was used in the film scenes of series “Highlander”. A lot of fans of this film think that Duncan MacLeod really lived in this castle. Unfortunately, it is not so.
