Dunnotar Castle, Scotland

From series “The Greatest Castles of Scotland”
Year: 7 century.

Dunnotar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress located on the north-east coast of Scotland. At first, it was mentioned in the 7th century. The main aim was to build a defensive construction that will be much better than other Scottish fortresses. This fortress is located upon a rocky headland. There was the time when it was possible to get to the castle only by a narrow and steep track that went through a complex of caves. Also, the castle had a secret passage that was hidden in a chimney of the rock.

Dunnotar Castle, Scotland For a long time, the fortress was inaccessible. In the beginning of the 12th century on orders of King William I the fortress was adopted in an administrative centre of Scotland. After these renovations, the castle was the main kings’ safe tower. Today a great number of legends are connected with this place. People say that the castle is full of ghosts. The most famous is a ghost of the lady in the green dress. Her favourite place is a castle brewery. According to the legend, that woman is still looking for her children that turned Christian.

The historical documents say that in the 5th century at the place of the castle was built the first Christian church. Right there Britts and Picts were converted to Christianity. The modern castle also has a church. It has appeared there in 1276 that bears Saint Ninian’s name. People who dare to visit the mysterious castle, will spend a great time here. The castle has long lasting and wonderful excursions. Tourists can see the residential accommodations, stores and stalls, barracks and other constructions of the inaccessible castle.
