Year: 1897. Height: 82,5 m.
One of the most outstanding lighthouses in France is situated on Vierge Island. It is the highest lighthouse in Europe, its height is over eighty meters. This tower is attractive not only to its enormous size but also to the marvellous interior decoration, which is made from light-blue opaline.
The decoration wasn't made for the purpose of making this place luxurious, it was a kind of necessary solution for saving this lighthouse tidy. Opaline is a mineral that is resistant to rust and is very strong and substantial to thermals differential. The highest European lighthouse was built in 1897 and works until today. Not far from it the smaller lighthouse has placed, which is elder for 50 years.
Together these lighthouses look fabulous. In warm season a lot of tourists visit this place. They can see the Ile Vierge Lighthouse with an excursion group or ask local fishers to travel with them by boat. Unfortunately, it is impossible to travel by a simple or motorboat on your own. It is rather dangerous in this place. There are a lot of rocks on the coastline, shallow zones and streams. The lighthouse on Vierge island has been saving sailors from these sanders for more than a hundred years.
