Cave Lupercal is one of the most important historical landmarks in Italy. The legend of Rome's foundation says that Romulus and Remus were found there by the she-wolf. Archaeologists have come across on this cave only in 2007. It is located 16 meters under the ground and is the main sanctuary of the ancient world. A great number of amazing legends are connected with this cave but no one can claim which is true.

The cave was found only thanks to the modern laser scanning technique. When the archaeologists have found this cave, they came to the conclusion that the cave area is not as big as they thought. It has regular oval shape and maximum diameter is about 8 meters. In the cave, there were found remains of the manmade decoration. The researchers were quite impressed to find something like this in such old cave. The floor was made of the burnt clay tile and the entrance was also made artificially. It tells us that people had lived in this cave more than 2 000 years ago.

For a long time, the cave was habitable and then was rebuilt in a cathedral. Now you can see the fragments of the saved wall-painting and mosaic on the cave’s ceiling. In the centre of the design, you can see a white eagle, the main symbol of Rome. A great number of artefacts that were found there say that this cave was used by Romans for conducting certain cultic ceremonies during the Lupercalia. Thanks to that fact the cave has received its name.
