Washington is an ideal holiday destination for sightseeing tourism fans. This is a real treasure trove of unique historic and architectural sights, the highest "concentration" of which can be found near the National Mall . It is an extensive park area with a length of about a mile. In the center of the Mall is the Washington Monument - an impressive large-scale granite obelisk with a height of 169 meters. The monument is dedicated to the first US president; its construction began in 1848 and was completed only by 1884. This monument is one of the world's highest buildings. Visitors to the city have a great opportunity to go up the stairs to the top or reach it by elevator.
On the four sides of the monument are four iconic landmarks - the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial , as well as the United States Capitol and the White House . The White House is the most significant landmark and the permanent national symbol of the United States. It is the official residence of all the presidents of the country. It is noteworthy that only the first president, George Washington, did not live in the White House. He headed the United States until 1797, while the construction of the White House was completed only by 1800. The original building has not been preserved - it was completely destroyed by the British in 1814. Subsequently, the official residence was restored, and today several halls of the White House are open to the public.
