The city of Sun Diego is a popular tourist destination attracting active leisure fans and various tours admirers. The city boasts numerous landmarks and sites with the Star of India being the oldest in the world active sailing ship among them. Having made a tour round the world, today the ship is under the wing of volunteers’ team. Tourists have a chance to get into ship cabins and enjoy old photos being the main decorative elements there.
The city hosts the oldest church in California. Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala was established in 1769. In course of its long history the building of basilica has been many times destroyed and renovated. In 1775 the basilica was ruined by native resistance. In 1803 a natural disaster badly damaged this religious construction. Architects have totally renovated and restored the building so today the basilica appears to the city guests in all its majestic glory.
One of the most mysterious landmarks of the city is considered to be a Queen Anne Victorian mansion named the Villa Montezuma. The mansion was built in 1887 and was owed by a well-known musician Jesse Shepard. The age-old mansion is subject of many legends and popular beliefs. At present the mansion is an established place for holding musical evenings as well as various Christmas events.
