Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona (the United States) is the main commercial airport of the state and a major one in the south-west of the country. The airport was opened in 1935. It comprises three runways which are capable of handling large aircraft. The annual passenger traffic of the air terminal makes up more than 45 million passengers a year. The airport is located close to the central business district of the city of Phoenix (5 kilometres). Both civil aviation and the United States Air Force make shared use of the airport. Due to the climatic conditions, namely constant winds, the airport operates three unidirectional parallel runways. The airport serves passengers in Terminals 2, 3, and 4. Terminal 3 (John S. McCain III Terminal) has two satellite concourses, which are the south and north concourses. Terminal 4 (Barry M. Goldwater Terminal) has 4 north and 4 south satellite concourses.
The city centre is connected with the airport by the light rail line which stops at 44th Street station in the territory of the airport. Public bus routes go not only to Phoenix, but also to other localities. SuperShuttles depart regularly from the airport. There are several official taxi firms at the airport.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport features various car rental agencies. Firms recommend that their clients should make an advance car reservation, as the number of vehicles is limited. Travellers should check with their selected car rental company for hours of operation in good time.
Advance car booking can be done on the website of the airport or on the website of the selected vehicle hire agency. The general information desk of the Rental Center works in the Rental Car Center of the airport from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Its contact details can be found on the website of the airport or at the information counters in the airport halls.
A shuttle connecting the terminals and the Rental Car Center departs from the baggage claim area of each terminal every 5-10 minutes (it stops at the curb at the exits). The Rental Car Center is located within its own building at 1805 E. Sky Harbor Circle South (between 16th Street and 24th Street, south of Buckeye Road). The Rental Car Center accommodates such companies as Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, E-Z rent a car, Fox rent a car, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Silvercar, and Thrifty.
