Hundred years ago, there was a small fishing village on the site of a modern resort. Modern travelers know Gijon as a well-developed beach resort and a cultural center with an abundance of interesting historical sites. Among religious sites, the interesting medieval church of St. Peter built in the early 15th century is noteworthy; it is made in the Gothic style. During the Civil War, the church was almost completely destroyed, but by the middle of the last century, architects managed to restore the beautiful building.
Travelers who are fond of interesting excursions should definitely visit the Jovellanos House Museum located on the square of the same name. It is a spectacular palace; many years the beautiful manor house has belonged to the family of the famous writer. The museum was opened in 1971; its walls house an interesting collection of art works. An old manor house is a permanent venue for conferences, concerts and other large-scale events.
One of the most interesting cultural centers of Gijon is the Museum of Asturias People. It introduces the culture and lifestyle of local population. The interesting ethnographic museum has been serving visitors since 1968; it features a very unusual layout. The museum is situated in extensive parkland and consists of a complex of halls; each hall represents its unique collection.
