Driving in Slovenia – Recommendations, Tips and Tricks

Previous tips
11. While driving, the mobile phone can be used only if it is equipped with the «hands-free» device. Also keep in mind that you should drive with lower beams turned on regardless of time and weather conditions.
12. When the vehicle is moving, the driver and all passengers in the vehicle have their seat belts fastened. Children under 12 years can only be transported in special child seats that should be installed only on the rear seat of the vehicle.
13. Public transport has a number of advantages on the roads of Slovenia. Car drivers should always give way to them. When the public transport stops to load or unload passengers, other vehicles are not allowed to overtake. Cars are also prohibited to occupy lanes dedicated to public transport.

Hints on Car Hire in Slovenia

When choosing a car for your Slovenia trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

During your booking, we will offer you to take a full coverage of the franchise ('No Risk' or 'No Excess' package). If you book a car without full coverage, it is recommended to take it at the pick-up time - this will substantially reduce your financial liability in Slovenia for the whole rental period.

During your car pick-up in Slovenia, do not forget to check what to do in breakdown-, accident- or theft-cases. Most of our offers include 'Breakdown Assistance' package. Besides this, every rental office would be happy to assist you with this package.

Prior to the car return, please check your voucher for the fuel conditions. If it is indicated that a driver shall return the car with a full tank, do not forget to refuel it on the way back, this will save you from additional charges at the rental office.

14. In cold season, drivers must equip their vehicles with winter tires (the period from November 15 to March 15). On some mountain roads, it is allowed to drive only if the vehicle is equipped with snow chains. In winter, local roads are always covered with snow and are very slippery, so it is unsafe to travel on some mountain roads.
15. Some roads in Slovenia are toll ones, so, in order to use them, motorists need to buy a vignette. The minimum cost of the vignette is approximately US$20 (valid for a week). It is possible to buy a vignette with different validity periods. The presence of the sticker is strictly controlled, and the penalty for driving on toll roads without the vignette ranges from US$440 to 1000.
16. You can buy a vignette at customs, as well as at some major petrol stations and shopping malls. The vignette must be attached to the upper left corner of the windshield on the inside. If the sticker is not attached, it is void, even if its validity period is correct.
17. You should also pay for the use of the Karawanken tunnel, which connects the A2 motorway with the Austrian A11 motorway. The cost of ride for an average car is approximately 6.5 euro. Motorists also have an opportunity to purchase a pass for a month (21.5 euro) or a year (58 euro).
18. In cities, it is usually simple to find a paid parking lot. On weekdays, the payment for the use of parking lots is charged from 8:00 to 16:00. One hour of parking will cost you approximately US$1.5.
19. On Saturdays, the cost of one hour of parking is the same, but parking is paid only from 8:00 to 13:00, and on Sundays drivers can enjoy free parking. Guarded parking lots are the only exception from the rule. They charge parking fee every day regardless of the time. The cost of one hour at such a parking lot can range from US$0.7 to 2.1.
20. Fines for wrong parking are also quite high, so drivers are recommended to choose a place to park with care. Even if you leave your car in the wrong place for a short time, it will be certainly sent to the penalty parking or its wheels will be blocked.
21. The majority of parking lots are equipped with parking machines, through which the payment is made. Drivers can also purchase parking tickets at newsstands. It's worth noting that most parking tickets can be purchased at least for an hour.
