Airport location, terminals and transportation
Sheremetyevo International Airport is the largest airport of Russia in terms of passenger traffic. The annual passenger traffic of the airport amounts to more than 40 million people. This air terminal is among the five largest federal airports of the country. The airport is located in the territory of the city of Khimki in the Moscow region. The aviation hub was put into operation in 1959. The airport was originally built as the country's Air Force military airfield. The airport got its name after the village beside which it is situated. After the facility had been built, it was handed over to civil aviation. The airport used to have 2 subdivisions, which were Sheremetyevo-1 and Sheremetyevo-2.
The air terminal encompasses two operating runways, two cargo terminals and five passenger terminals, which are A, B, D, E, and F. Terminals D, E and F constitute the South terminal area, while Terminals A and B form the North terminal area.
One can get from the airport to Moscow by rail, as a suburban train departs from the Aeroexpress railway station. Buses and shared taxis number 851, 949, 817 and 948 run to the city. Bus N1 operates at night. Car sharing, taxi (desks are found in all the terminals) and car rental services are available at the airport.
Rental offices, how to find them, where to return car
Car rental services are provided at Sheremetyevo International Airport. The vehicle rental companies are positioned on the first level of Passenger Terminal D. The car rental offices are placed opposite the exit from the international baggage claim hall (the exit between Baggage Carousels 5 and 6). A few major international companies operate at the airport. These are Avis, Sixt, Europcar, and Hertz. Along with these companies, there are also the following local firms at SVO: Rentmotors and Tiscar. All the representative offices work without days off. Avis works from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Hertz is open from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. All the other firms start working at 9 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.
The rental terms and conditions of Rentmotors and Tiscar include daily mileage restrictions for their vehicles. The firms operate a full tank policy, according to which customers pick up and return rental vehicles with a full tank. Such companies as Avis, Sixt, Europcar and Hertz offer unlimited mileage to their customers.
When concluding a rental agreement, all the companies charge insurance fees, local taxes and an airport fee. What is more, they hold a security deposit on a client's card. The deposit is returned after the car has been returned.
Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby
There are about 10 various parking lots near the airport. The Park and Fly parking lot offers a free shuttle service to the terminals. The airport features indoor and outdoor parking lots. The indoor parking lots are stationed next to Terminals D, B, E, and F. The outdoor ones are set beside Terminals D, E, F, and include parking lots P3 and P6 near Terminals E and F. One may park a car in the territory of the airport outside the parking lots for free for up to 15 minutes.
The Vozdushny Express, a capsule hotel, is found in Terminal E. The Radisson Blu Hotel is connected to Terminals D, E and F by a walkway. The number of hotels is placed in the vicinity of the airport. They are the Holiday Inn, the Novotel, the Park Inn, the Sheraton, the MONA, the Midland, and the Aero Plaza.
