Road Rules and Traffic Regulations in Romania - Driving Nuances

1. The total length of roads in Romania is approximately 200,000 miles; the majority of roads are distinguished by a very good quality, and their informative support will also leave you pleased. All roads in the country are divided into the following types: main national roads, secondary national roads, European national roads, and highways.
2. In addition to the driving license, foreign drivers will only need to have the vehicle certificate and the “green card”. In case you have a document like car insurance, it is recommended to take it as well.
3. You will need to pay in order to drive on certain roads. In most cases, enters to such roads are equipped with large blue boards with the «RO-VINIETA» mark. In order to get the right to use paid national roads, you must purchase the "vignette". You can buy it for a week, a month, for three months or for a year. The cost in this case will be 3, 7, 15 and 30 euro respectively.

Nuances of Car Rental in Romania

To save on your rental, we advise to book your car in advance. You will save the most if you do this several weeks or even several months prior to your trip. Rental offices in Romania usually raise rental prices over time, based on the number of cars left available for the accounting period.

When looking for an exotic car (cabriolet, minivan or limousine), we advise to check in the rental offices located at airports, as they usually provide much wider choice comparing to offices in urban areas.

Upon receipt of invoices, bills and documents for your car at the rental location, please compare the obtained data with your voucher. Quite often, employees of rental offices in Romania try to add optional charges or services without informing customers.

It is very important to pick up your car at the rental office in Romania in a correct way. Prior to leaving the office, carefully inspect the car for various defects, and ensure that all the discovered defects are mentioned in your rental documents. In case of a non-compliance found, place a demand for correction to the rental officer.

You can always check our car actual rental offers in Romania. Simply use the search form at the top of the page. We guarantee that you will not find better prices anywhere else!
4. "Vignette" is an ordinary check, and the driver should always keep it. You can purchase the vignette at customs, as well as at Rompetrol, OMV and MOL petrol stations. If previously the "vignette" needed to be attached to the windshield, today its presence is checked automatically. The cameras, installed on roads of the country, simply compare the numbers of cars passing by with the purchased vignettes. If there is no record about your car, you will be issued a fine. The fine for using national roads without the “vignette” is from 60 to 120 euro.
5. Foreign drivers, who plan to make a ride to Romania on a personal car, should not forget to have two warning triangles, a reflective vest, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher in the car. People, who plan to pass the customs in winter, are recommended to purchase snow chains.
6. Drivers should never forget about speed limits and remember that the maximum allowed speed in residential areas is 20 km/h. In general, it is allowed to drive at a speed of 50 km/h in towns, and on country roads the maximum permitted speed is 90 km/h.
7. On national roads the speed limit is 100 km/h, and the same limitation concerns express roads. The highway is the only place where high-speed driving is absolutely normal - on A1 and A2 highways the maximum allowed speed is 130 km/h. Drivers, whose driving experience is less than one year, are allowed to drive at a speed of 80 km/h and 110 km/h respectively.
8. All the roads are equipped with corresponding road signs that warn drivers of the speed limit. The control over the implementation of traffic regulations is carried out by means of radar and cameras that are installed literally everywhere.
9. In the period starting from the beginning of November until the end of March drivers are obliged to use winter tires. If you break that rule, you are likely to get a fine that will range from 600 to 1000 euro (the amount of the fine depends on the size of the car).
10. The use of studded tires is strictly prohibited in the country. If you need to ride on roads covered with ice or snow, it is possible to equip the vehicle with snow chains, but you cannot use them on ordinary roads.
11. Starting from 2006, it has become mandatory to use low beams on local roads. Drivers are allowed to use anti-fog lights only when weather conditions are bad, otherwise the offender will be fined.
