Oslo Airport is a main international air hub that serves the capital of Norway. The airport is the second in the passenger traffic among Scandinavian airports. Oslo Airport annually services about 28 million passengers. The airport is located in the city of Gardermoen, 35 km from the capital. On the airfield, there are two air-strips, one of which is used for maintaining heavy wide-body equipment. OSL serves as a base for the Royal Air Force of the country.
In the 50s of the last century, there was the military airfield of the Norwegian army in the territory where the airport is located now. Then, the airfield served as a military, as well as civil, airport for charters to Fornebu Airport. The new airport was opened here in 1998. Besides the passenger terminal, there is a VIP terminal here that services the members of the Royal family, cabinet members, and foreign governmental delegations. There is also a cargo terminal.
The railway links the airport with the city. Most of the passengers arriving at the airport catch Express Flytoget trains. The railway links OSL (the railway station is located below the passenger terminal) with Oslo Central Station. Near the airport, there are several European and national highways: E6, E16, #35, 174, 120. From the airport, buses run not only to Oslo, but also to other cities and ski resorts. The airport offers taxi services.
