It is also worth highlighting the Fort Ricasoli which is located near the capital of Malta. The fort was built in the 17th century and was controlling the eastern passage to Valletta bay. During World War II, it was heavily damaged by bombing. It was only until 1958 that the British army settled here, and during that time many buildings were partially restored. By the way, it was here that many famous Hollywood historical films were shot – like “Troy”, “Gladiator”, and “Munich”. The Lascaris War Rooms, which played an important role in the defense during World War II, is also interesting. Nearby is located an open-air museum, Saluting Battery, where you can learn a lot about that time.
There are two monuments to the victims of war in Valetta and they are peculiar works of art. The first one can be found at the pier – it is called a Siege Bell War Memorial and is a bronze bell-memorial weighing 10 tons. Every day at 12:00 there is a ringing sound, reminding people of those who gave their lives during the Second World War. It is outstanding for the fact that it was founded in 1993, and Elizabeth II and the President of Malta were present during the opening. If you go up from here, you will see a beautiful view of the harbor and a observational point, from which three cities can be beheld – Senglea, Birgu, and Kalkara. The second memorial is simply called War Memorial. It is located on the outskirts of a city called Floriana and is dedicated to those who died during the First World War. It is an obelisk in the form of a Latin cross.
