Bergamo is one of the few Italian cities, which features perfectly preserved medieval fortifications. One of the most interesting objects is the Venetian wall, which was started in the mid-16th century. For the construction of this wall a huge amount of money has been spent, over the years the citizens had to pay the city treasury enormous contributions. After its completion, the wall struck with its size; its length is more than 6000 meters, and the maximum height reached 50 meters. At the end of the 20th century Venetian wall was completely restored, today it is an important historical landmark.
Another interesting symbol of Bergamo - funicular that connects the old and new parts of the city. Lower station of the funicular is located at Viale delle Mura, and the top is not far from the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The funicular is very popular amongst tourists; during the trip it is possible to take beautiful panoramic pictures of the city. Experienced tourists advise to buy tickets as early as possible to take a comfortable seat by the windows.
