There is one more popular and colorful festival that takes place in close proximity to Catania, namely, in Acireale. This is Acireale Carnival that is held at the end of February and the beginning of March (the festival lasts 3 weeks). This is the time when the town at the foot of Mount Etna turns into a colorful kingdom. There is an old tradition associated with this holiday – people use flowers to make funny figures. Many participants love Acireale Carnival because of the traditional “confetti fight”. It is an exciting activity and a mesmerizing show. The event’s program includes theatrical, musical, and dancing performances, as well as various contests and games. In short, no one will feel bored at Acireale Carnival.
Besides festivals, many national holidays are celebrated in Catania. Naturally, these celebrations are ideal for all tourists who want to get acquainted with the local culture. For example, February 5 is the day when the city cherishes the patron saint of the city – Saint Agatha. All central streets of the city get a festive decoration for this holiday, and solemn procession carries the statue of Saint Agatha. Besides admiring the colorful parade, this celebration is a fantastic opportunity to sample local delicacies and drinks and, of course, watch fantastic fireworks in the evening.
