Among sites and landmarks of the city of Ravenna tourists will discover ancient religious buildings and constructions, majestic palaces, museums and scenic park areas aged more than several hundred years. The most remarkable object of tourist interest is the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe. The landmark is located near the city center. The first church was found on this place in the 6th century, however in course of time its appearance has been sufficiently changed. The Basilica has been extended and added to its present scale. Today city guests can observe a beautiful bell tower of the 9th century and a harmonic portico which was built in the 16th century.
The main relic of the basilica is an ancient altar. The territory of the basilica keeps several tombs of saints. The Basilica di San Vitale is another remarkable landmark of the destination as well. It is located near a railway station. This beautiful monument of the Byzantine epoch has been preserved in good condition till present days. The basilica was established in the first half of the 6th century, the construction of the religious building lasted for 20 years.
The basilica is noted for its luxurious internal decoration, its walls are designed with subtle mosaic sets and marble inlays. The Ostrogoth’s tomb constructions are part of the historical heritage of the city too. The Mausoleo di Teodorico is a unique building, which is mainly built of limestone blocks.
