The historical cemetery of Campo Santo founded in the 13th century today is among the most significant architectural monuments of Pisa. Up to the 18th century, only the wealthiest and most high-ranking citizens could be buried in this place. Today, here you can find tombs of many prominent military figures, politicians and artists. The old cemetery has also preserved three ancient chapels, each one has an unusual historical atmosphere.
One of the most interesting places for walks is the historic quarter of Borgo Stretto. It attracts travelers with its unique medieval-style buildings and several picturesque miniature squares. On the ground floor of many ancient buildings, there are fine national restaurants, souvenir shops, and handicraft workshops.
One of the most beautiful architectural objects of the city is Palazzo della Carovana built in the 16th century. Originally the palace belonged to the Knights of the Order of St. Stephen. A distinctive feature of the historic building is a luxurious facade with sgraffiti elements. Several beautiful ancient sculptures can be seen on the adjacent territory. The palace houses one of the universities of Pisa. In days free from lectures tourists can enroll on guided tours of the historic building.
