An interesting architectural monument is the ancient gate of Porta Marzia erected in the early Middle Ages. It was part of the very first fortress wall built around the city. In the 16th century, the old gate has miraculously managed to avoid destruction. During this period, the construction of a new defensive wall began, and the old gate was a kind of obstacle. The skillful architect Antonio da Sangallo has managed to save the history by building the gate into the city wall.
The city also has interesting ancient sights, and the Hypogeum of the Volumnus family is a great example. The ancient tomb dating back to the 3rd century BC has preserved Etruscan inscriptions. According to available historical data, it served as a burial place for Etruscan patricians. During the study of the Hypogeum, beautiful antique funerary urns were found, including an urn with the ashes of Arnth Veltimna Aules, the founder of the Volumnus family.
Besides the amazing Etruscan monuments, Perugia is also famous for its Christian sights. The Church of Sant' Angelo is one of the most beautiful and popular in the city. it is the very first temple of Perugia, whose history begins in the 5th century. Today it is a vivid example of the Romanesque style. This church is notable for the fact that elements of destroyed pagan buildings were used during its construction - it makes it a truly unique architectural monument.
