Cagliari is probably the oldest city on Sardinia. It’s an excellent place for hiking and sightseeing. Historical buildings are everywhere, yet most of them are situated at the historical center of the city. There are remnants of ancient citadel and Saint Remy rampart. Another point of interest and one of the most popular cultural places is the National Museum housing a collection of ancient fresco paintings. New city area is another interesting place with amazing architecture. Buildings are painted into various colors, which creates special city atmosphere.
The best known religious landmark of Cagliari is the Basilica di San Gavino located at the Porto Torres. It's an impressive 70-meters high stone building. Ancient martyr statues and other hundreds of years old artifacts are kept there. From architectural point of view, Cattedrale di Santa Maria di Castello is the most interesting place in Cagliari. Construction of this cathedral has begun in 17th century, but it was finished only 400 years later, making the building an interesting mix of various architectural styles. The formidable front side with elegant chandeliers, beautiful court and spectacular decorations makes it one of Sardinia's most visited landmarks.
