There are several interesting castles with a rich history in the city. First of all, there is the Castello Svevo di Brindisi. The first mention of the castle at this place dates back to the year 1227. The fortification structure at various times played an important role in the defense of the city. Later, in the 18th-19th centuries, the castle was used as a prison, a warehouse, and then it passed under the command of the Navy. Beautiful views to the port of Brindisi open up from here. Near the castle, you can find the Torrione dell'inferno. This tower was built in the year 1484 and is a part of the castle. The structure was built in a cylindrical form.
Another interesting castle that you should visit is the Castello Aragonese, also called Castello Rosso or Castello Alfonsino. This castle was built in 1481 to protect the city from the east, in place of Benedictine abbey, on a separate island. The building is notable for the fact that the castle has been perfectly preserved up to today, representing a beautiful example of medieval architecture. On the way to the island, you can take a walk through the picturesque port of the city, Marina di Brindisi. Another fortification construction bears the name Bastione San Giacomo. Today, this building belongs to NATO; that is why it is impossible to get inside it. However, anybody can stop to appreciate the building from afar.
