Seafood has been the main component of local gastronomy for many years. Lefkada is also famous for its wonderful wines and special desserts that will not leave any sweet tooth indifferent. Until recently, the island was almost completely isolated from other regions of Greece, so all dishes were prepared here only from local products. Even though today local markets and stores can offer products from various European countries, most local residents still prefer local food.
In restaurants, fans of fish must try black perch, which is traditionally stewed in its own juice. In the process of cooking, they add a minimum amount of spices to make the fish taste very natural. Dozens of fish soups are served at local restaurants, and here you can also try baked eel with oregano.
Local fishermen catch rare gray mullet, the preparation of which is always given special attention. The fish is cooked with garlic and herbs, and served with a potato garnish. The choice of shellfish dishes is equally impressive in local restaurants, pasta with seafood is especially popular with foreign guests.
A very interesting regional specialty that cannot be tasted in other regions of Greece is "Bakaliaros Skordalia". That's what they call small pieces of cod spiced and fried in batter, always served with a special garlic sauce.
