In addition to some national food, restaurants offer visitors a popular Grüne Sauce. There are several options for the sauce; the most famous is made from vegetable oil, boiled eggs, salt, and an incredible amount of fresh herbs and spices. There is also a green sauce made of yogurt and sour cream; this delicious condiment is often served with chicken dishes, as well as boiled potatoes. Goethe was fond of that sauce; according to one legend, the recipe of Grüne Sauce belongs to his mother.
Tourists visiting the city on Christmas Eve have to try Bethmännchen. Those are small rosy buns with marzipan, which are sold literally everywhere. Sweet lovers are sure to enjoy Frankfurter Kranz. This is an incredibly beautiful layered cake generously flavored with crunchy nuts and various fruits. Most often, a cake is prepared with addition of strawberries, cherries and blueberries.
Homemade cheese (Handkäse) is among local delicacies too. This is a special type of cottage cheese appreciated by gourmets around the world.
