The symbol of this beautiful city with an interesting history is a sparrow (Ulmer Spatz). Travelers will certainly pay attention to the fact that souvenir shops sell a lot of interesting trinkets featuring this fragile bird; football fans are well aware of the fact that the local football team is called ‘Ulm sparrows.’ It’s unclear why the humble bird has received such important and honorable titles; many interesting legends associate with this amazing fact.
According to one of them, the sparrow has helped local builders during the construction of the famous Ulm Cathedral. They needed to carry logs of great height that repeatedly exceeded the height of fortification walls through city gates. Desperate builders decided to dismantle the wall, but at that moment they saw a sparrow flying over to the city.
It was carrying a twig for a nest in its beak, and the twig was parallel to the ground. Builders were delighted with such a simple and ingenious solution of the problem; they easily carried timber through the gate and decided to thank the wise bird. The small stone figure of a sparrow was mounted on the roof of the Cathedral in the Middle Ages.
