Fabulously beautiful scenery, spectacular medieval fortresses and castles, ancient monasteries and charming streets of the old town shrouded with amazing stories give Thuringia its special charm. Each city of the region has an amazing history featuring interesting events. The highest concentration of historic monuments is in the capital; literally all the tour programs begin with a visit to Erfurt Cathedral Square.
Not far away is scenic Augustinerkloster built in the 13th century. Construction works were completed only in the mid-16th century; today the monastery occupies a vast territory. Everyone can enjoy its spacious halls and appreciate the rich collection of antique books and furniture. The monastery also features the incredibly beautiful Romanesque church.
Not far from the capital there is the picturesque town of Weimar that has gained the status of European Capital of Culture in 1999. The German National Theatre and the monument to Goethe and Schiller located at the entrance are among the most important symbols of the city. The old town is justifiably proud of its magnificent museums; there are 27 of them in Weimar. There are 16 unique architectural monuments in the city that are considered landmarks of world importance.
