An interesting historical symbol of the city is the Castle of Gottesaue. It was built on the site of an ancient Benedictine abbey. The construction of the castle began in 1588 and lasted nine years. During the long history of the castle, it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. In 1818, it was converted into a barracks, and in the first half of the 20th century, it housed a multi-apartment building. The historical building was badly damaged during the Second World War. The castle was completely restored only by 1982. Currently, the castle is the location of a musical institute.
Fans of walks in historical places will be interested to climb to the top of Mount Turmberg. Here, the ruins of the ancient Castle of Durlach were preserved. This castle was built in the 11th century and for a long time, remained the residence of the Hohenberg Counts. During the next battle in the 16th century, the castle was almost completely destroyed. Only one of its impregnable towers, in which the meteorological station is now located, was preserved. At the top of the mountain, tourists can climb the funicular. In addition to the ruins of the ancient castle, there are many interesting sights.
