Besides concerts each year the city hosts various festivals dedicated to works of Bach and Mozart. The first Mozart Festival took place in the city in 1921. Since that time it has always taken place in the beautiful residence of Würzburg. Festivals dedicated to works of the great composer are held annually in many European cities, but the holiday in Würzburg has always attracted a huge number of fans of classical music from different parts of the world. In 1790 Mozart was heading to Frankfurt am Main. He made a one day stop in Würzburg. Later the great composed used to recall the great and friendly atmosphere which had prevailed in his tiny streets. The café, which was visited by Mozart during that trip, is now one of the main attractions of the city.
Besides fantastic music festivals the city hosts a wide number of other interesting celebrations. Late August is the time of the annual wine festival, which lasts until the middle of September. The square in front of the cathedral remains the main location of the large-scale event. Here are organized numerous fair trades and interesting performances. Late September is the time for another celebration, which traditionally leaves shoppers very excited. The annual Mainfränkischer Markt (Main Franconian Fair) is one of the most exciting events in the country. Hundreds of colorful stalls are installed on main squares of the city. Here visitors are welcome to buy various national delicacies, wine and crafts by local masters.
