Nowadays the commune of Chamonix is known as one of the major centers of tourism and winter sports in the Alps of France. Here have taken place the first Winter Olympics in the history of sport (1924).
Chamonix is particularly attractive by the affordability of services and adaptability of many trails for amateurs and beginners. The 20 mile long off-track slope from the 3843m peak (Aiguille du Midi) is widely known not only in this town. The funicular leading to the peak was built in1955 and had no equal lifts at that time.
The main sights of Chamonix are Mont Blanc Tramway mountain railways and Montenvers Railway, which are equipped with the third rail and with teeth. Travelers will also find much interesting in Alpine Museum.
The cultural life of Chamonix is also very rich in activities. Here are conducted numerous sports competitions, music and cultural events. Among them are the famous 24 hour motor race on ice, Christmas events, festivals, short films, all kinds of tournaments, and much more. A big part of the events (L'arrivee du Pere Noel (Father Christmas meeting), a children's carnival, etc.) are specially created for tourists with children.
