Karlovy Vary (also known as Carlsbad) is a popular and prestigious resort, but in addition to local attractions and beauty of the local nature travelers are attracted by the peculiar culture of local people. Just like many years ago, various handcrafts here are a thriving business. Locals follow the traditions of their ancestors and celebrate holidays, the age of many of which is several hundred years. Even New Year celebration here is different from the rest of Europe.
The reason for this is the fact that the 31th of December is the day when local residents celebrate an old religious holiday - the Day of St. Sylvester. Holiday celebrations begin early in the morning, when the streets of the city become the location of interesting fairs, concerts and activities for children. On this day people should have fun and walk in the city until the evening, and when darkness falls to the city locals come back home and prepare a festive table.
According to a good old tradition, carp baked with apples should be among the dishes on the New Year's table. This dish is considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity. However, poultry dishes should be avoided on the festive table. It is believed that birds can carry away the happiness that awaits hosts next year.
