What to visit around: Hanging Glacier Falls near Coyhaique

On the territory of the Queulat Puyuguapi National Park in Chile is an amazing waterfall, named the Hanging Glacier, whose name is literally translated as 'waterfall of the hanging glacier'. The name completely reflects the main feature of the waterfall - it really flows from the Ventisquero Colgante glacier. The height of this strange waterfall is about 80 meters. Usually, it consists of two streams of water, but sometimes, a third stream appears in the period of peak melting of the glacier.

The Hanging Glacier Waterfall is considered the most impressive not only in the country, but also on the territory of South America. Because of the high limestone content and other minerals, the glacier between two rocks has always azure hue. The same colour has water which is collected in the pools of the waterfall. The discoverer of the natural landmark was Captain Enrique Simpson, who explored this terrain in 1875. If his measurements were accurate, then for the last hundred years the Ventisquero Colgante glacier has shifted by several kilometers.
