La Paz is a city in Bolivia. This is the virtual capital of the republic located in the center of the South America continent. The official capital of Bolivia is Sucre. La Paz is located in Andes, on the territory of the Bolivian plateau, in the canyon of the La Paz River that is included into the basin of the Amazon River. La Paz is the highest-altitude capital of the world. It is located 3400 meters above the sea level, while some quarters of the city are located 4100 meters above the sea level. The city’s airport is located on the same height.

The city was founded in 1548. When translated from Spanish, the world La Paz means 'peace'. Starting from 1898 La Paz is considered the virtual capital of Bolivia. Here are located the residence of the president and the government of the country.

Due to mountain relief the city has an interesting shape – it looks like a giant cup, in which the roads into the city go up, while the roads from the city go down. The city has got such an interesting shape due to its unique location. Many years ago a giant volcano crater was located here. It stopped acting millions of years ago.

Among the main sights of the city is the president’s palace Palacio Quemado (the name is translated as «Burnt Palace»). This name was given to the palace after it had been burnt by the Indians during the uprising in 1875.

The historical center of La Paz is the location of Murillo Square. The square is the location of the monument devoted to the freedom fighters. Here you can also see the Capitol (National Congress). The square is surrounded by numerous colonial houses and churches that are rich in sculptures (San Francisco Church, San Pedro Church, Santo Domingo Church).

In order to observe the exhibits of the Indian colonial art, you can visit the National Museum of Arts. Casa de Murillo Exhibition Hall is a wonderful place to see pictures and sculptures. You can also attend theatres and see the bulls fighting on the arena of the city.
