Jolly Beach is a resort town on Antigua Island that never ceases to conquer hearts of its numerous guests. For a long time, there were military bases on the island, and a fail to visit them would definitely be a mistake. Perhaps, Fort Barrington is the most interesting destination. Besides learning the history of the fort and the island in general, visitors can also admire striking views of the seaside. Fort James is one more defensive fortification that deserves a visit. It was built by the British in 1739 in order to protect the island from the French. Nowadays, only several cannons and fragments of the walls have remained from the fort. Just like with Fort Barrington, stunning views of the surroundings are the biggest attraction of Fort James. Both the forts are located not far from St. John's.
When describing religious landmarks of the island, it is important to mention the Cathedral of St. John the Divine that is open in St. John’s. The cathedral is a marvelous landmark of the colonial architecture. It also has an interesting history. The original church was in ruins after a devastating earthquake. However, it was rebuilt, and now visitors can admire the gorgeous building in its full glory. Holy Family Cathedral is one more interesting religious landmark of the island. It is famous for its unique relaxing atmosphere. This church is modern - it was built in 1987 – and has a contemporary design. Holy Family Cathedral has a bell tower with the biggest cross in the whole country.
