The city got the name 'City of the Big Shoulders' presented to it by poet Carl Sandburg but later, in 1893, Chicago was nicknamed 'a Windy City' thanks to speeches of its politicians. Chicago started in 1830 as a small village of 350 people and grew into a great 'Second City' (after New York). In 1893 Chicago hosted the World's Columbia Exposition, which lasted for six months and managed to attract about 26 million visitors. The city faced problems after a great fire in 1871 when the central part of the city was almost ruined and about 100,000 of people were left homeless. It took much time and efforts to recover and the Exposition appeared to be the culmination of it.
