The length of this picturesque island is just 19 kilometers. Its name can be literally translated as "grain". The town was founded by the Romans far back in the prehistoric times. The fertile soils of this region have become a real treasure for first settlers. In the 5th – 7th centuries Formentera was already widely known as an agricultural center; later large deposits of salt were discovered on the island. Several large plants appeared here. Close proximity to Ibiza has made this town the center of recreation and tourism. As opposed to the bustling and popular resort this place is relatively quiet. This has made it very popular among fans of diving, fishing and wildlife.
There are several hotels and resorts on the island. However, they are not able to accept all tourists, so many people prefer to live in hotels in Ibiza and come to Formentera to enjoy beach rest. Despite the fact that this town is very small, you will find here several attractions in addition to wonderful beaches. The central square is the location of the church built in the beginning of the 18th century. This church looks more like a sumptuous castle.
