Though Bilbao was founded on the 15 of June 1300, its industrial development and transforming into a wealthy city became possible only in the 19th and 20th centuries. The most important industries which contributed to the city's development have always been shipbuilding and production of iron and steel.
The city succeeded in business until the serious economic crises made the Bilboa government review their city business plan. They staked on tourism, culture and environment and they won.
That victory became possible thanks to architectural masterpieces of the Guggenheim Museum and Euskalduna Palace. It helped not only to attract a vast number of tourists to the city but also to improve the ecological situation there as it made possible for the city to breathe freely after a long industrial period of like.
