There are a lot of holidays that people like to celebrate in Setubal. Especially they like the municipal holiday of September 15. The inhabitants celebrate the event which took place in 1860 on which King Pedro V of Portugal officially recognized Setúbal as a city.
An the beginning of the 20th century, Setúbal was a very important center of Portugal's fishing industry. Nowadays many factories which were created at that time do not work today. The industrial life of the city is not very developed. But tourism gives a big opportunity for the future of the city because the nearby coast of the Arrábida natural park offers beautiful beaches and unspoilt nature.
One can admire a colony of dolphins there. They live in the Sado River. It's interesting to know that across the river from Setúbal lies the peninsula of Tróia, where luxury resorts were built and abandoned after the realization they were being constructed on sinking because of unstable land. But a new luxury resort is planned to be built on the place of Tróia. There's a great beach Albarquel, located in the very beginning of Arrábida.
A great variety of monuments decorate the city but the main historical monument of the city of Setúbal is the Monastery of Jesus. It was created in 15th-16th century and this church represents one of the first buildings in the Portuguese late Gothic style known as Manueline.
