The old fishing village of Sagres is home to a unique sea attraction, as here is the biggest wind rose in the country; its diameter is 43 meters. There is also the curious natural landmark, Ponta Sagres. This unusual stone formation looks like a huge finger pointing towards the sea.
Several important religious sites, including Igreja de S. António are situated in Lagos. There are also several interesting museums in the city. Many excursions cover the town of Portimao. There you can see the majestic Fortaleza da Santa Catarina de Ribamar, as well as a lovely Igreja Mãe built in the 18th century.
The unique monument of Moorish culture is located in Silves; the beautiful castle has perfectly survived to this day. It is surrounded by high walls with huge water reservoirs. These massive fortifications were built on the site of an ancient mosque. Near the castle you can see the ruins of the old bridge built during the reign of the Roman Empire.
Lagos also has a scenic medieval castle, as well as the very special monastery, Convento de São José. An excursion program is held there every day. One of the busiest tourist towns of the province is Albufeira; it has an attractive historic area and a modern center with an abundance of entertainment options. In the historic district, numerous buildings in the Moorish style can be found; travelers just won’t find a better place for hiking. One of the oldest and most beautiful cities of the province is Loule. There you can discover amazing historical buildings on every street. Attractive shops and stores are situated in old houses.
