When a terrible earthquake of 1755 nearly ruined much of the Lisbon's center Baixa the district was subject to total reconstruction and thus most buildings there date to the 18th century. The devastating catastrophes of the past seem to be fully reflected in the well-known Lisbon's fado music that sounds as a requiem for the golden epoch of the great sea travelers. Yet now Lisbon is on a new stage of its life and its way is a way of renewal and change.
