Groningen is the capital city of the province of Groningen located in the Netherlands. The city has population of about 181 thousand people , that makes it the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. Groningen was founded in the third century AD. However there are lots of archeological stuff proving existence of ancient settlement 5000 years old there.
The city lived through destructions of World War II. The main square, Grote Markt, was ruined in 1945, at the Battle of Groningen.
Although Groningen is not a large city, it is known as developed urban centre of business, education, arts and music. The University of Groningen is the second oldest university in the Netherlands and has great educational traditions. Groningen is also famous for it's museum, designed by Alessandro Mendini. It is a marvelous example of modern architecture. The Martini Church is also a very interesting building in Groningen. It looks so beautiful at night, lighted with thousands of bulbs.
