Ravenna used to be the centre of Byzantine civilization in Italy for two centuries (from the sixth up to the eighth). It is sometimes named a 'Capital of Mosaics' as early Byzantine and Christian monuments there are decorated with mosaics.
We can name at least several of such buildings listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites: a beautiful Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the octagonal Basilica di San Vitale, and the churches of San Apollonare Nuovo and Sant'Apollinare in Classe.
