Ordinary people were resting and having fun; colorful masks gave them an opportunity to feel equal with privileged persons. This holiday reached its heyday in the 18th century, when locals began to arrange large-scale celebrations. Today, the main part of celebrations and entertainment events is held on the picturesque Piazza San Marco. Many years after the fall of the Venetian Republic the holiday was banned; modern carnival begun in 1979, and since then it has been eagerly awaited not only by locals, but also by tourists.
No less interesting is the awesome Carnevale di Verona; it is held annually before the beginning of Lent. In addition to large-scale parades, the holiday program includes the historic regatta held on the Adige River. During the Carnival, vacationers can not only participate in various recreational activities, but also enjoy the main festive meal, potato dumplings.
