Once Cagliari was a large base of marine military forces. It was conquered by the Spanish and Pisa troops, and during the times of World War II the biggest part of the city was turned into ruins, losing a huge part of priceless historical heritage.
You should start observation of the city from a walk on Via Roma embankment that is stretched until the town’s port. Walk in spacious valleys of the city and you will reach the old part of the town named Castillo. The central part of the region is occupied by an old castle surrounded by bastions. This building is the reminder of the times when this town was ruled by the Spanish. The terrace of Umberto I features an observation area, from which you can see wonderful panoramic views of Cagliari.
